One of the founder KIT members was Gordon Lovell, who you will know passed away this week.
Gordon competed in and completed the first Ironman distance race in the UK in Swindon in 1989 along with Simon Attwood, Gordon was a vet at the time and was a true pioneer of the sport.
I first met him at Kingswood in 1990 when he was coaching the Monday night swim session at the leisure centre where the likes of Kes, Nigel and Yvonne Cox,Alison Lucas,Vic Newman, Dave Light, Steve Light, Mark Bembenek, Mark Chivers, Martin Ogden, Steve Moody and Phil ¡®Animal¡¯ Cutterham were all training, this was the Kingswood Triathlon Club session which always ended in the leisure centre bar.
Gordon was the man who assessed how good you were and placed you in the relevant lane prior to coaching a tough but enjoyable session, he used to swim alone at the end of each session in order to have time for his own training.
He would represent the club at the regional Triathlon meetings and would always submit the club details to obtain 2 or 3 entries to the London Marathon, which he would give to us for allocation to those who had entered and had been unsuccessful.
As a club we organised our own event in the early 90¡äs, this attracted a field of 300+ athletes and was a nationally well known and well supported race. We always needed volunteers, especially for the swim section, an 800m swim needed timekeepers and officials to get it all started and to organise the continuous flow of competitors.
Gordon always volunteered to use his swim club association to muster the numbers required and to take overall charge of everything poolside. We have depended on him many times for this, he never let us down!
In those years I lived overlooking Page Park in Staple Hill, I would often see Gordon running around the park and would sometimes join him for a lap or two. He would talk about the weather or other topical things, it would be impossible for an observer to see anything other than an older guy out jogging to stay fit, I knew he was an Ironman, a title that few had in those days, and that he was made of mental toughness but with a quiet modesty that is a rare combination.
I am proud to have known him, he started a journey that we are all still on..
Thank you Gordon, from all of us.

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Gordon Lovell passed away last night following a long fight with advanced Prostate cancer.
He was an inspiration to us all most of you will remember he coached us on the Monday night swim sessions and was one of the first KIT Ironmen another of his may attributes was he was able to get hold of at least two Golden London Marathon tickets every year without fail even beating the eel in getting these!. He was a larger than life character, yet very humble at the same time.
Our thoughts and prays are with Cynthia and family at this time
